Manila – Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (Kalikasan PNE), joined by various civil society organizations, held a protest outside the Court of Appeals (CA) as environmental defender Eco Dangla took the witness stand for the hearing of his petitions for a Writ of Amparo and Habeas Data. Supporters called on the (CA) to grant Dangla’s plea for a permanent protection order, stressing the urgent need for justice and safeguarding those championing environmental rights.

Dangla and fellow environmental activist Joxelle Tiong were abducted in Pangasinan last year. Both have been outspoken critics of environmentally destructive projects in their province, including black sand mining, incinerator project, and nuclear power plant.

Jonila Castro, Advocacy Officer of Kalikasan PNE, highlighted the rising dangers faced by environmental advocates in the Philippines during the Marcos administration. “The relentless vilification and terror tagging of environmental defenders have fueled a dangerous surge in abductions,” Castro stated. “In the face of an escalating environmental crisis, the government must protect us, not attack us,” she added.
Dangla emphasized the broader implications of his legal actions. “I filed these petitions not only to ensure my safety but to bring attention to the worsening attacks on environmental defenders nationwide. We must demand culpability and provide protection for those risking their lives for justice and sustainability,” he said, urging citizens to support the cause.
