Eco Dangla, Kalikasan advocacy officer and People Surge spokesperson, highlighted once again the dire state of our environment under the Marcos Jr. administration. He expressed grave concern over the administration’s preference for approving more mining firms, reclamation projects, and exploration permits over protecting forests and biodiversity conservation efforts, all in hollow attempts to ‘salvage the economy.’
This has become yet another life-threatening burden for the marginalized to bear. As Eco recalled, the Philippines was battered this year by a series of unprecedented storms — Carina, Enteng, Kristine, Leon, Nika, Ofel, Pepito. These storms submerged communities and decimated livelihoods, disasters that could have been mitigated — or even avoided — if the government had invested public funds into long-term solutions and improved the quality of life of its citizens, enabling them to rise back from the floods.
Instead, these crucial funds have been poured into the questionable 2025 General Appropriations Act, suspiciously approved by both Congress and the Senate. Billions were slashed from social services and welfare programs only to be diverted to re-electionists’ ‘pet projects’ and even the President’s pork barrel.
The calls for accountability over these recurring patterns of corruption and impunity reflect the people’s unwavering resolve. They will continue to rise up to smash bureaucratic capitalism down to its rotten core and fight for the social justice they deserve.
